Visões do passado e do futuro em William Morris: contribuições para uma história especulativa do design

Abstract


Entendendo que o design especulativo lança um olhar ampliado sobre as possibilidades do próprio design, nos propomos a situar dentro do espectro do design o pensamento político e as utopias literárias de William Morris, figura-chave para a historiografia do design. Interessamo-nos não pelo Morris “pioneiro” do campo, mas pelo ator histórico engajado em processos de “futuração”. Defendemos que seu envolvimento com o futuro se mantém ativo mesmo quando se volta ao passado medieval para buscar inspiração. Por isso, estruturamos este artigo como um diálogo entre duas das obras literárias de Morris: Um sonho de John Ball e Notícias de Lugar Nenhum, que narram viagens temporais em sentidos opostos, mas que podem ser reunidas dentro do conceito de design especulativo.
